Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognized as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended

Mark Lobb Fishmonger Wild Food Dartmouth UK South Devon

Nearly all of our fish is caught locally within 30 miles of Brixham or Plymouth, the shellfish is landed in Dartmouth & Salcombe, our Hake and Haddock are caught around the North Cornish and Devon coast, Meagram Sole are caught around the Isles of Scilly, all landed in Newlyn and sent up over night. Our Wild Salmon and Sea Trout are sourced from the Welsh and Scottish borders. As we work with the local day fishing boats the fish is no more than 24 hours out of the sea when it gets to us, which means you get it as fresh as it comes – local really is local. We work with the seasons, and fish availability. If it’s not right we don’t stock it! For more videos check my website! http://videotechmedia.co.uk Tel Mobile 07956141090 Home 01803834216

Paradox Trimaran 60′ Cruiser/Racer in Dartmouth UK Designed by a Dartmouth company.

One of the most unique sailboats launched in the past five years. Paradox is a cruiser / racer trimaran designed by the legendary design team of Irens / Cabaret and constructed in carbon epoxy by Marsaudon Composites in Brittany. Built using the moulds of Loick Peyron’s highly successful ORMA racing trimaran Fujifilm, Paradox utilizes much of the same technology that made ORMA trimarans the most exciting sailboats on the water. Paradox’s design enables safe offshore passages and comfortable cruising with up to six people, but she can reach speeds of up to 30 knots when racing. Easily sailed shorthanded by two people or safely day-sailed with a dozen friends and family, Paradox is a unique, highly versatile sailboat. Since launching in March 2010, her owner has done three Atlantic passages and cruised on Paradox in Brittany, Sardinia, Greece, the Caribbean, the Canaries, the Cape Verde islands, Bermuda, Newport, Maine, the Azores, Panama, and most recently, San Francisco. Paradox averages between 300 and 350 miles per day offshore, so she can make an Atlantic crossing in 7 – 10 days. Her advanced energy system includes solar panels, hydro-generator, and fuel cell that provide complete autonomy offshore without need for the engine. Her refrigerator, water-maker, hot water heater, shower, retractable anchor launching system and swim platform make Paradox a versatile and comfortable cruiser, while her hydraulic mainsheet and electric winches make sail handling effortless. Paradox has a perfect racing record, with seven wins in seven regattas. During the 2013 Caribbean 600, Paradox beat the monohull course record set by Speedboat 100, and came within ten minutes of the multihull course record set by a racing ORMA trimaran. King Lear Act 2 Presented by The Inn Theatre Company and performed at The Castle Dartmouth UK

King Lear, drawing to the end of his reign decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, Coneril, Regan and the youngest, Cordelia. At court, where the division is to take place, Lear asks each of his daughter's in turn which of them loves him the most '...that we our largest bounty may extend where nature doth with merit challenge' His two eldest daughters flatter him outrageously but Cordelia cannot bring herself to do so, but fears nothing, being sure in her love for her father 'Then poor Cordelia! And yet not so, since I am sure my love's more ponderous than my tongue.' Lear, who is enraged by her refusal to play his game, banishes her and Kent, who stands up for the king's youngest daughter, and divides Cordelia's portion of his kingdom between the other two daughters so that ' future strife may be prevented now.' Lear makes a proviso that he shall '...by monthly course, with reservation of an hundred knights... shall our abode make with you by due turn. Only we shall retain the name and all th'addition to a king. The execution of the rest, beloved sons, be yours. Which to confirm, this coronet part between you.' Shakespeare Week 10/07/20013 Elfic – Juggler & Jester at the Royal Avenue Gardens Dartmouth UK.

Shakespeare Week 10/07/20013 Elfic - Juggler & Jester at the Royal Avenue Gardens Dartmouth UK Who is Elfic? Rupert Elford, (a.k.a. Elfic the Jester and Professor Elfic), graduated in 1988 from Bristol University with a BSc in Chemistry and an ability to juggle. However his passion for circus skills and performance gravitated him towards a career in entertainment. After countless hours of obsessive practice and a stint at Cicus School, Rupert mastered the arts of toppling off tightropes, wobbling on unicycles and juggling dangerous objects. His alter ego, Elfic the Jester was born in 1992 and has since entertained young and old in every imaginable venue in the South West. In 1995 he inadvertently won 'Jester of the Year' in Covent Garden and more recently has performed as one half of 'The Desmond Tutus Unicycle Ballet Troupe'. He has been teaching circus skills in schools, youth clubs and community centres for many years now, which has proved successful and popular. In Prof Elfics' Science Circus Rupert at last has the chance to combine his scientific knowledge with his circus experience..co.uk For more videos visite my website www.videotechmedia.co.uk

Shakespeare Week August 10th 2013 Harberton Navy Morris Dancers at Dartmouth UK.

Harberton Navy Morris Dancers performing during the Shakespeare Week in the Royal Avenue Gardens at Dartmouth UK South Devon. For more videos check my website! http://videotechmedia.co.The Concise and almost complete History of Harberton Navy. The Harberton Navy evolved as a Nautical offshoot from the successful Harberton Morris, under its first Admiral Phil Sheardown. Phil is an enthusiastic paddler of Canadian Canoes. A gentle paddle down the River Dart in the sunshine, for a picnic, proved an irresistible attraction for a number of us, so with a significant number of people enjoying the combined activities, Nautical, Social, Epicurean and of course the Morris, the Harberton Navy was born. The side started with experienced dancers and musicians so we were able to attend Folk Festivals with confidence in our first year, 1995. Our presence made itself felt at Hastings and Chippenham as well as a number of local venues. Chippenham is one of our favourite festivals with the river so close to the caravan site. Frequent cruises upriver to 'swim' with the moorhens, ducks and swans, as far as we can get before the boats ground in the shallowing river. One year our boats were needed to navigate the caravan site itself, taking much needed supplies (beer) into stranded tents and awnings. Not all our cruises are in idyllic conditions. Phil's early sailing directions took the flotilla into some interesting Estuaries, in interesting conditions. 'Master and Mariner'! we have been there. As well as stormy Ocean cruises, some of us have been camping in deep frost over New Years eve, or navigating the fast flowing water of the middle Dart in February. Not all our members are that intrepid, or indeed not all of our members canoe. It is not compulsory and there is much in our activities that people find attractive. Never growing to be a large dancing side, we nevertheless are a socially close-knit side, very much enjoying each others company and gathering as a group relatively often. Our culinary expertise has no bounds, the majority of the partners involved in our group enjoy cooking. With the necessary glass of wine, of course. Each couple will bring to a party enough for everyone to eat, only to find that everyone else has brought enough for everyone as well, Oops! We eat well. Former years have seen us under the capable leadership of our

Leader is a former Brixham sailing trawler, one of the largest of her type ever built in 1892 at the boatyard of A. W. Gibbs in Galmpton on the river Dart. She fished in UK waters until 1907, when she was sold to new owners in Scandinavia. She remained there as a working vessel until the 1960's, when she became a sail training vessel under the flag of the Swedish Cruising Club. In 1985, she was taken to the West coast of Scotland, where she was used for sailing charter holidays. In 1996 she was brought home to South Devon, and operated from Dartmouth until 1999, when she returned to Brixham. Leader is rigged as she would have been when first built, as a gaff ketch to haul a fishing beam trawl. She is 80' long on deck, and 105' overall. She displaces about 110 tonnes in sailing trim. She has a beam of 19'6" and a draft of 10'. Down below, Leader has been fitted out for her modern role. She has accommodation for twelve guests and five crew, a large saloon area, a galley with a large, gas cooker, two heads, two hot showers, and a generator that supplies a ring main with 240v electricity. She has a well equipped nav. station with modern navigation equipment including Radar, GPS and DSC VHF Radio. www.trinitysailing.org

How to make hot cross buns with French Chef Julian Picamil from Saveurs Dartmouth UK

How to make hot cross buns with french chef Julian Picamil from Saveurs Traditional French Bakers from Dartmouth UK, A hot cross bun is a spiced sweet bun made with currants or raisins and marked with a cross on the top, traditionally eaten on Good Friday. In many historically Christian countries, buns are traditionally eaten hot or toasted during Lent, beginning with the evening of Mardi Gras (the evening before Ash Wednesday) through Good Friday, with the cross standing as a symbol of the Crucifixion. They are believed by some to pre-date Christianity, although the first recorded use of the term "hot cross bun" was not until 1733. It is believed that buns marked with a cross were eaten by Saxons in honour of the goddess Eostre (the cross is thought to have symbolised the four quarters of the moon); "Eostre" is probably the origin of the name "Easter". Others claim that the Greeks marked cakes with a cross, much earlier. In the times of Elizabeth I of England (1592), the London Clerk of Markets issued a decree forbidding the sale of hot cross buns and other spiced breads, except at burials, on Good Friday, or at Christmas. The punishment for transgressing the decree was forfeiture of all the forbidden product to the poor. As a result of this decree, hot cross buns at the time were primarily made in home kitchens. Further attempts to suppress the sale of these items took place during the reign of James VI (1603-1625).

The Fairmile sailing from Dartmouth UK to Slapton Sands, Torcross and Blackpool Sands.

With boat trips, ferry services, sightseeing cruises and excursions departing from Torquay, Brixham, Dartmouth, Dittisham and Totnes - Taking to the water is a must when visiting South Devon's beautiful bay home to the towns of Torquay and Brixham, or the South Hams picturesque port of Dartmouth or the medieval town of Totnes - so why not do it in style aboard the largest ship sailing in the area WW2 Heritage Ship 'Fairmile' or one of our other twelve vessels. Whether taking the ferry between Torquay or Brixham, jumping aboard the family friendly wildlife Seafari Cruise in search of dolphins, seals and natures wild little friends or of course visiting the home of the late Dame Agatha Christie at Greenway on a hill towering over the beautiful and serene River Dart by 1940's ship or vintage bus - services to Greenway House are available from Totnes, Dittisham and Dartmouth as frequent as every hour, Torquay and Brixham one service per day. If that wasn't enough why not have a go at fishing aboard one of our lucky catch boats. Finally a visit to the English Riviera wouldn't be the same without a cruise to Dartmouth our South Hams neighbour, the famous ancient naval riverside town - and what better way than by ship, landing you there for a few hours prior to returning. Our Dartmouth Ferry departs from Dartmouth at 2pm - History buffs will delight in taking part aboard the WW2 Grand Heritage Voyage or Premier Gold Cruise launched by HRH The Princess Royal which in addition to landing in Dartmouth (for those whom have joined from Torquay and Brixham) extends your trip for an afternoon sail to Slapton Sands, Torcross and Blackpool Sands where Exercise Tiger took place - the full scale rehearsal for the D'Day landings. Greenway Ferry and Pleasure Cruises offer a wide range of family boat trips which start in the English Riviera ports of Torquay (Princess Pier) and Brixham or the South Hams ports of Dartmouth, Totnes, Dittisham and Greenway. With thirteen vessels to choose from and being a Visit England award winning Quality Visitor Attraction and a member of Devon and the English Riviera Top Attractions you can relax in the knowledge that you will have a truly memorable experience for all the right reasons. REMEMBRANCE DAY PARADE DARTMOUTH UK 2012 ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

Hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month," in accordance with the Armistice, signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning. ("At the 11th hour" refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 a.m.) World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919The day was specifically dedicated by King George V on 7 November 1919 as a day of remembrance for members of the armed forces who were killed during World War I. This was possibly done upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey to Wellesley Tudor Pole, who established two ceremonial periods of remembrance based on events in 1917.The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem "In Flanders Fields". These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war

SAVEURS HOW TO MAKE PAELLA WITH THE FAMOUS FRENCH TV CHEF JULIAN PICAMIL FROM DARTMOUTH UK

Juilan from "Saveurs" traditional French bakers in Dartmouth uk shows you how to make a Spansh Paella. Paella (Valencian and Spanish: is a Valencian rice dish that originated in its modern form in the mid-19th century near lake Albufera, a lagoon in Valencia, on the east coast of Spain. Many non-Spaniards view paella as Spain's national dish, but most Spaniards consider it to be a regional Valencian dish. Valencians, in turn, regard paella as one of their identifying symbols. There are three widely known types of paella: Valencian paella (Spanish: paella valenciana), seafood paella (Spanish: paella de marisco) and mixed paella (Spanish: paella mixta), but there are many others as well. Valencian paella consists of white rice, green vegetables, meat (rabbit, chicken, duck), land snails, beans and seasoning. Seafood paella replaces meat and snails with seafood and omits beans and green vegetables. Mixed paella is a free-style combination of meat, seafood, vegetables, and sometimes beans. Most paella chefs use calasparra or bomba rices for this dish. Other key ingredients include saffron and olive oil.

DARTMOUTH UK THE BOAT FLOAT ENCLOSED MOORINGS PARTS WHICH DATE BACK TO 1585

Enclosed moorings. Parts may date as early as 1585, the north side is probably c1685; major works c1889 by WN Bidder, engineer, whose original plans and elevations, dated 1879, are on display in Dartmouth Museum. Built of limestone with some granite, mostly coursed blocks with ashlar kerbs and steps, includes a cast-iron bridge. The Boat Float is a trapezoidal enclosure for mooring small boats. It is surrounded by reclaimed land on the north, west and south sides and the South Embankment of c1889 forms the east side, and here the road bridges a channel connecting the float to the River Dart. A flight of steps lead down to the water on the west side and there is a ramp down the east side. Walls are made of roughly-cut blocks laid to courses but there are several changes of style. Most obviously the west wall employs larger blocks and it is vertical down to a projecting plinth whereas the other walls have slight batters and no plinths. On the east and south sides the kerb has been replaced with C20 concrete; the northern kerb remains but has been covered with concrete; the intact western kerb is granite and includes sandstone slabs over the bridge. Towards the west end of the northern wall there is a small blocked arch. The gap through the east side has been lined with C20 concrete. The bridge above is carried on a pair of large cast-iron girders fashioned with a flat segmental arch below. The Boat Float is the focus of the Quay/Butterwalk part of Dartmouth. It is also of considerable historic interest. The southern and western sides were the main quay of Dartmouth from 1585; the southern side was known as Spithead in the C18 and C19; the area to north was reclaimed c1685. The float was finally enclosed c1889 with the building of the South Embankment.

J80 PREPARING AND FITTING THE RIGGING READY FOR THE WORLD CHAPIONSHIP IN DARTMOUTH UK

Support from the town of Dartmouth and local businesses has also been crucial to staging the event in the town. Dart Harbour & Navigation Authority has provided berthing for competitors, a water taxi service and an enormous amount of logistical assistance to the regatta organisers. The local RNLI is assisting with communications and Dartmouth Regatta Committee members have also been helping to ensure that the event is a success. Baltic Wharf in Totnes, First Class Nautical of Dartmouth and Darthaven Marina in Kingswear facilitated a month long coaching programme for the UK teams which took place on the waters in which the World Championship will be fought. Of course Dartmouth also offers the potential to deliver extremely challenging and exciting conditions for those racing at the event. Couple this with the splendour of the coastline and the warmth and support of Dartmouth residents and it is clear to see why the entry number is so high. The result is that some of the best sailors on the International racing circuit along with World Champions both past and present are coming to Dartmouth to compete. Jay Lutz of the USA and Ignacio Camino Rodrigues of Spain, the current J/80 World Champion will both be hoping that Dartmouth affords them a second opportunity to take the top spot on the podium this year.

BROWNS HOTEL, BAR AND RESTAURANT Browns is a small townhouse hotel in the centre of Dartmouth. It is owned and run by Clare and James Brown who have refurbished it over the last three years. Browns is now an unstuffy yet stylish hotel, with contemporary furnishings and a relaxed feel. Browns has 10 individual rooms ranging from small doubles to our four poster room. Our rooms are spotlessly clean, comfortable and modern in their design. They are not luxuriously appointed nor are they huge in size. However they are comfortable, have great beds, big duvets and feather pillows, new shower or bathrooms and have some fun touches: funky fabrics, leather wall tidies, Robert radios, fresh coffee and nice toiletries. Breakfast is an important part of any stay. We believe that breakfasts should be leisurely and comfortable. We have big wooden tables and generous leather chairs where you plan the day or read your newspaper. We use the best ingredients possible for breakfast, from our organic bread to our free range eggs and smoked bacon. We squeeze our orange juice and make our own marmalades, jams and Greek yoghurt. Browns has the most stylish bar in Dartmouth, popular with both locals and guests. You will find it difficult to be dragged away from our funky big sofas, warm open fire and freshly made Tapas. The leather bar, great art on the walls, the latest magazines, and our no smoking policy ensures that Browns Bar is a great place to chill out. MONTY'S NEW DARTMOUTH VENTURE, GREAT ESCAPES OPENED FRIDAY 6TH APRIL. 4 MARKET STREET, DARTMOUTH, TQ6 9QE! WE INTERVIEWED ANDY CARTER, PHOTOGRAPHER (WEDDING • MARINE • SAILING) WHO WORKS IN ASSOCIATION WITH MONTY. http://www.dartmouthphotography.com/ WELCOME TO MONTY'S GREAT ESCAPES! (Please note that some details may change in course description as we are still finalising everything but this will give you a good idea of the shape of things to come)! ESCAPE, EXPLORE, DISCOVER Based in the beautiful coastal town of Dartmouth in south Devon, the Great Escapes shop acts as a base for local wildlife tours, courses in natural history film making and underwater photography, diving trips, stocks signed DVD's and books from Monty's various television programmes, lovely coffee, and is the source of all manner of tall tales and unlikely schemes. Dartmouth and Surrounds: Dartmouth is a particularly lovely and historic town, built up around the deep-water mooring provided by the River Dart. The town itself has a number of award winning restaurants, highly individual shops, boutique hotels, and sits at the mouth of one of the most beautiful river valleys in Britain. The local coastline has a number of blue flag beaches, with the nature reserve at Slapton Ley a short drive away. The Shop: Based at the corner of Fosse Street and Market Street, the shop is the focal point for everything we do. As well as stocking a wide variety of personally signed wildlife books and DVD's, it is the place where you can book on our boat trips or courses, and has a couple of comfortable sofas and a permanently whistling and steaming coffee machine. We would love to see you there -- drop in and tell us about your diving or natural history experiences, or just come in to take the weight off your feet and play with the dog. What's In There? We stock all of Monty's natural history and expedition DVD's and books. A lot of the time we stock Monty and Reuben as well, but only when they're in town or not at sea (if you're keen to say hello to them, give us a call beforehand and we'll let you know when they're around). DVD's include Great Barrier Reef, The Great Escapes Box Set, Great Ocean Adventures, and Totally Wrecked. Books include The Great Escape, The Great Irish Escape, Great Ocean Adventures, The Big Catch, The Eyewitness Guide to Scuba Diving, Go Dive, Oceans, and Dive -- The Ultimate Guide. All books and DVD's are signed by Monty (and Reuben if you like). We also stock a range of beautiful images of local wildlife, as well as pictures of sharks, dolphins and whales from expeditions around the world taken by some of the best wildlife photographers in the business. In the corner of the shop are the all important sofas. It's here you can sit and have a coffee, and noisily announce how much bigger the shark you encountered was than the one in the picture. LOVE DARTMOUTH UK • SPOTLIGHT ON PHIL SCOBLE BOOK RELEASE • DARTMOUTH UK

PHIL SCOBLE is the author of the new history book, The Chronicles of Dartmouth: Volume 2 has said he is envious of those historians who will chronicle our current era -- because technology will help them immensely. Phil Scoble, a former newspaper journalist, has taken four years of painstaking research to create the 130,000 word book for Dartmouth Publisher Richard Webb. After having to search high and low for back copies of the Dartmouth Chronicle on which the book is based, he came to the conclusion that the internet would create a golden age for historians. 'I imagine online databases and social media will give them the opposite problem to the one I faced,' he said. 'I was trying to find basic facts about events and build a historical narrative from them -- from now on the challenge is going to be what points of view historians choose. 'Instead of hunting for sources you will be overwhelmed by them: wondering which to choose and how to sort the impartial from the biased. It's a different challenge and it's clear this huge proliferation of information will change the job historians have forever. 'But for me the challenge of finding and then distilling the events of 55 years of history has been a very fulfilling one and the book is brilliant. My publisher and the designer Laurence Daeche have done a wonderful job.' The Chronicles of Dartmouth: Volume II is published by Dartmouth publisher Richard Webb. Richard is a world-record breaker with his book The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady in 1977 that has now sold more than 3 million copies. Returning to his hometown after a career in London and Exeter Richard Webb has created a niche local publishing business of high quality, accessible books defining the history and beauty of Dartmouth and its area. 'This is the continuation of a story which I started with the first Chronicles of Dartmouth which dealt with the first 100 years of the Dartmouth Chronicle,' he said. 'Ironically I think that the archives from 1854 to 1964 were much more complete than those between 1955 and now! Phil has had to put in a Herculean effort to find and record events from all those years, and I'm really pleased with the book we've managed to create.' The book will be launched at a special event at Dartmouth's Flavel Centre that will include a free presentation on the time period covered by the book called Dartmouth Down the Decades by Phil Scoble. For more details, or to reserve a seat for the presentation, contact the Flavel Centre on 01803 839530, check out www.theflavel.org.uk, or go to www.dartmouthbooks.co.uk. Dolphins are marine mammals closely related to whales and porpoises. There are almost forty species of dolphin in 17 genera. They vary in size from 1.2 m (4 ft) and 40 kg (90 lb) (Maui's dolphin), up to 9.5 m (30 ft) and 10 tonnes (9.8 long tons; 11 short tons) (the orca or killer whale). They are found worldwide, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, mostly eating fish and squid. The family Delphinidae is the largest in the Cetacean order, and evolved relatively recently, about ten million years ago, during the Miocene. Dolphins are among the most intelligent animals, and their often friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them popular in human culture

DARTMOUTH UK BANKS OF THE RIVER DART (PART 15)

As elsewhere in North America, Newfoundland was colonised by the British in competition with the French. However, the process was very much slower than was the case for Canada and the United States. From as early as the 16th century, English and French fishermen sailed across the Atlantic in spring, spent the summer fishing the rich stocks of cod, and returned in autumn. Amongst the English, a triangular trade grew up: Supplies were sent from England to Newfoundland, salted fish and cod liver oil taken to the Mediterranean, and wine and fruit brought back from there to England. The vast majority of the English fishermen and merchants were from Devon. In the period 1675-1681, for example, an average of 4000 Englishmen per year travelled in fishing boats to Newfoundland. Their most common ports of origin were Dartmouth (42%), Bideford & Barnstaple (18%), Plymouth (10%), Poole (9%) and Teignmouth (6%) Several Dartmouth merchants made fortunes from the triangular trade. Settlement was slow and even discouraged at times. The size of the permanent population rose very gradually, from about 1000 in 1713 to 40,000 in 1830(3). The English first settled the area around St John's, the present capital, and then expanded along the entire east coast. The French concentrated on the north and south coasts. Naturally there was conflict, but the French never succeeded in establishing a permanent settlement. By 1830, over 80% of the population lived on the east coast; there were still very few settlers on the west coast, which was not settled until the second half of the 19th century. The vast majority of the permanent inhabitants were of English extraction, but there was a significant number of Irish.Newfoundland achieved responsible government in 1854, dominion status in 1909 and became (with Labrador) a province of Canada in 1949. For further information on the exploration and settlement of Newfoundland, visit the Newfoundland Heritage site. Wikipedia has a concise political history of the province.

BANKS OFF THE RIVER DART (PART 14) KINGSWEAR CASTLE TO NEWFOUNDLAND COVE, DARTMOUTH UK.

Devon sea rescue team saves three after boat capsizes The semi-submerged boat was towed back to Dartmouth Three people have been rescued from a Devon estuary suffering from hypothermia after their boat capsized. The 17ft (5.2m) day boat overturned off Newfoundland Cove, near Dartmouth, at about 1300 BST, the RNLI said. A Dartmouth Harbour Patrol vessel picked up those on-board and took them to the Royal Dartmouth Yacht Club. They were treated by two ambulance crews at the yacht club and their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening. The RNLI inshore lifeboat righted the semi-submerged boat, owned by a man in his 70s who was one of three people rescued, the rescue charity said. It was then towed back to Dartmouth There was a dead whale lying in Newfoundland Cove and no matter how pretty the path between classy Kingswear and the paradisiacal pile of Coleton Fishacre, its massive corpse could help but instil an air of melancholy in the otherwise happy passer-by. Getting there: Car parks on hill above Coleton Fishacre are easy to find by following signs south of B3205. Recommended map: Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure Map 20 is ideal companion. Distance & Going - four miles - steep in places. More information: National Trust Dartmouth office tel: 01803 752466. If the whale hangs around for long enough it will instil something else as well, but when we walked by it was still relatively fresh from the sea and so its blubber had not yet started to decompose. From the our viewpoint on the path 150 feet above we were saddened to sea this great wild thing looking for all the world like some film-maker's prop, lying motionless on the beach. But please don't let the decaying carcass of a whale put you off this walk, which really is one of the most perfect perambulations to be found along the south coast. Park your car in either of the car parks just above Coleton Fishacre, which you'll easily find just south of the road between Brixham and Kingswear. A lane links the two car parks and if you walk along it to the west - and keep going - it will turns into a narrow path at Higher Brownstone Farm, and this will take you steeply down towards Kingswear. It's one of those paths where the bed-rock shows through to somehow bear witness to the hooves of the centuries, and this rather historic mood is later highlighted by the fortifications which you'll see in the bay far below.

BANKS OF THE RIVER DART (PART 13) BOAT MOOR MOORINGS TO KINGSWEAR CASTLE, DARTMOUTH UK.

Kingswear Castle was built between 1491 - 1502, as an artillery tower for use with heavy cannon. Due to the limited range of cannon at the time, the fort at Kingswear was designed to work alongside Dartmouth Castle on the opposite bank, so that between them they could provide complete cover of the narrow entrance into the harbour. As gun technology improved and the range of the weapons increased, new gun emplacements were added to Dartmouth Castle, aiming further out towards the estuary mouth, leading to a decline in the defensive role of Kingswear Castle.

BANKS OF THE RIVER DART (PART 12) DARTHAVEN MARINA TO BOAT MOORINGS, DARTMOUTH UK.

Stroll along the Embankment, sit and watch the boats and yachts go by, on summer evenings may be a chance to listen to the Band playing in the bandstand. In season the chance to take a boat trip either up river to Totnes or along the Coast to Brixham and Tor Bay. The majority of Dartmouth's half timbered houses date from Elizabethan times. The Dartmouth Higher Ferry, also known as the Dartmouth--Kingswear Floating Bridge, is a vehicular cable ferry which crosses the River Dart in the English county of Devon. It is one of three ferries that cross the tidal river from Dartmouth to Kingswear, the others being the Lower Ferry and the Passenger Ferry. Unlike the Lower Ferry, which operates from slips in the centres of both Dartmouth and Kingswear, the Higher Ferry crosses to the north. In doing so, it allows the A379 road between Kingsbridge and Torbay to bypass the narrow streets in the centre of Kingswear and Dartmouth. The eastern ferry slip of the Higher Ferry is immediately adjacent to the Britannia Crossing, a level crossing across the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway. All vehicles entering or leaving the ferry must cross this crossing. The ferry is owned and operated by the Dartmouth--Kingswear Floating Bridge Company, and a toll is charged. The previous ferry boat, named No. 7, was built in 1960 and could carry up to 18 cars. Unusually, although it used cables for guidance, it was actually propelled by paddle wheels, a characteristic it shared with the Bac du Sauvage in France.Bridge Company signed a contract for the construction of a replacement ferry. This ferry, which can carry up to 36 cars, came into service in late June 2009. Unlike the previous ferry, the new ferry is a more conventional cable ferry, using the cables for propulsion as well as guidance. However, it is also provided with four thrusters, one positioned at each corner, in order to provide additional manoeuvrability when operating in strong winds and tidal conditions.

Greenway is an estate on the River Dart near Galmpton in Devon, England. It was first mentioned in 1493 as "Greynway", the crossing point of the Dart to Dittisham. In the late 16th century a Tudor mansion called Greenway Court was built by the Gilbert family. Greenway was the birthplace of Humphrey Gilbert. The present Georgian house was probably built in the late 18th century by Roope Harris Roope and extended by subsequent owners. It was bought by Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan in 1938. The Greenway Estate was acquired by the National Trust in 1999 and it is now a Grade II* listed building. The estate is known for its large riverside gardens, which contain plants from the southern hemisphere and have been open to the public since March 2002. The house was occupied by Christie and Mallowan until their deaths in 1976 and 1978 respectively. Christie's daughter Rosalind Hicks and her husband Anthony lived in the house from 1968. Rosalind Hicks died in 2004. The garden is open to the public as is the Barn Gallery, which shows work by contemporary local artists. The house's restoration is complete and is open to the public

Dittisham is a village and civil parish in the South Hams district of the English county of Devon. It is situated on the banks of the tidal River Dart, some 2 miles (3.2 km) upstream of Dartmouth. The Greenway Ferry carries pedestrians across the river from Dittisham to Greenway Quay, adjacent to the Greenway Estate. Formerly the home of the late crime writer Agatha Christie, this has views across the river, and the house and gardens are now owned by the National Trust and are open to the public. As of the year 2001, the parish had a population of 424. The equivalent figures for 1801 and 1901 are 639 and 549.[ Dittisham has given its name to the Dittisham plum, a dessert variety grown here.

ENTERING DARTMOUTH Dartmouth is deep, sheltered and easy to enter. The approach is from SSE, leaving Castle Ledge green buoy to starboard and the red Homestone buoy to port. Two south-cardinal buoys guard the dangers on the east side of the approach around the Mew Stone. Opposite Kingswear Castle leave Checkstone red buoy to port, steer through the narrows and follow the river upstream. Opposite Bayard's Cove, watch out for the Lower Ferries whose floats are towed alongside with tugs -- they need room to manoeuvre. The Higher Ferry, half a mile further up, is paddle-driven on two cables that sink down behind it, so wait to pass at least 50m astern. Dart marina is just beyond the Higher Ferry on the west shore. At night: The white sector of Kingswear leading light brings you safely in from the south-east between the Homestone and West Rock buoys and then through the castle narrows.

Dartmouth is a town and civil parish in the English county of Devon. It is a tourist destination set on the banks of the estuary of the River Dart, which is a long narrow tidal ria that runs inland as far as Totnes. It lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and South Hams District, and has a population of 5,5 HistoryDartmouth was of strategic importance as a deep-water port for sailing vessels. The port was used as the sailing point for the Crusades of 1147 and 1190, and a creek close to Dartmouth Castle is supposed by some to be named for the vast fleets which assembled there (Warfleet Creek). It was a home of the Royal Navy from the reign of Edward III and was twice surprised and sacked during the Hundred Years' War, after which the mouth of the estuary was closed every night with a great chain. The narrow mouth of the Dart is protected by two fortified castles, Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle. Originally Dartmouth's only wharf was Bayard's Cove, a relatively small but picturesque area protected by a fort at the southern end of the town

The lower section of the River Dart forms Dartmouth Harbour, a deep water natural harbour with a long history of maritime usage. In modern times, the port's commercial activity has declined, but it is still a busy port for local fishing vessels and a wide variety of yachts and other private boats. Several local companies specialise in shipbuilding and repairs to small tonnage craft.[7] Dartmouth is also the home of the Britannia Royal Naval College and as a result is routinely visited by sizeable naval ships. Smaller naval tenders are often seen carrying out training exercises in the harbour and river. Large cruise ships are occasional visitors, with the largest visitor to date being the MV Royal Princess (30,277 GRT).[7][8] Upstream, the Dart is navigable to sea-going vessels as far as the weir in Totnes. The river almost dries out for 2 miles (3.2 km) below Totnes at spring tide low water, but vessels drawing up to 3 foot (0.91 m) can proceed to Totnes from one and a half hours after low water. Above the weir, the river is navigable only to small craft such as kayaks and canoes.[9] Several companies operate trips on the river, including Dart Pleasure Craft Limited, who also trade as River Link and operate the Passenger Ferry between Dartmouth and Kingswear. These include cruises from Dartmouth to Totnes, which can be combined with journeys on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway and an open top bus between Totnes and Paignton to create a circular trip.[10][11] The harbour and port are popular leisure boating locations, and several marinas and boat yards are located on the river. The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta takes place annually over three days at the end of August.

BANKS OF THE RIVER DART (PART 3) WARFLEET COVE TO CORONATION PARK DARTMOUTH UK.

The River Dart is the source of much folklore on Dartmoor, where it is traditionally respected and feared - the waters have a tendency to rise without notice following heavy rainfall on the moors above, adding to the dangers of its rapids and powerful currents. This gave rise to the couplet: "River of Dart, Oh River of Dart! Every year thou claimest a heart." The 1951 non-fiction book The River Dart by Ruth Manning-Sanders centres on the river and its history. Alice Oswald, English poet born 1966, wrote the 48 page poem entitled, "Dart." The poem's voice is that of the River Dart, which Oswald adapted from three years of recorded conversations and research with people who inhabit the communities along the river. The Weaver Twins from Stoke Gabriel wrote a song entitled, "Dart". The music video was filmed along the river and has been featured on Radio Caroline television.

BANKS OF THE RIVER DART (PART 1) COMBE POINT TO DARTMOUTH CASTLE, DARTMOUTH UK.

Combe Point to Dartmouth Castle along the river by boat. The river begins as two separate branches (the East Dart and West Dart), which join at Dartmeet. The paths along these rivers offer very attractive walking, and there are several small waterfalls. The rivers are crossed by a number of clapper bridges, notably at the hamlet of Postbridge. After leaving the moor, the Dart flows southwards past Buckfast Abbey and through the towns of Buckfastleigh, Dartington and Totnes. At Totnes, where there is a seventeenth century weir (rebuilt in the 1960s)[citation needed it becomes tidal, and there are no bridges below the town. The River Dart showing the lower part of the fish ladder near Buckfastleigh.A passenger ferry operates across the river from the village of Dittisham to a point adjacent to the Greenway Estate. Formerly the home of the late crime writer Agatha Christie, this has stunning views across the river, and the house and gardens are now owned by the National Trust and are open to the public. The Dart estuary is a large ria and is popular for sailing. The village of Kingswear and town of Dartmouth are on the east and west sides of the estuary, and are linked by two vehicle ferries and a passenger ferry. The deep water port of Dartmouth is a sheltered haven. The entrance to the river from the sea is a rocky entrance with cliffs either side. On the East side Kingswear Castle sits very close to the water's edge, and on the west side Dartmouth Castle is built on a rocky promontory at sea level. The castles once operated a defensive chain across the estuary, which was raised at dusk to destroy enemy ships attempting to attack the harbour. The remains of the operating mechanisms for the chain are still visible in Dartmouth castle. The river takes its name from a Celtic vague word meaning 'river where oak trees grow' due to the banks of the lower Dart being covered in ancient woods of native oak

BANKS OF THE RIVER DART (PART 2) DARTMOUTH CASTLE TO WARFLEET COVE DARMOUTH UK,

The flooded ria that forms the lower reaches of the Dart, with its deep water and steeply sloping valley sides, is a considerable barrier to crossing traffic. There are no bridges below Totnes. At the mouth of the river, it separates the communities of Dartmouth and Kingswear. There have been proposals to bridge the river here, but these have come to nothing. Instead the two places are linked by, in order going upstream, the Lower Ferry, Passenger Ferry and Higher Ferry. The Lower and Higher ferries both carry vehicles. Some 2.5 miles (4.0 km) upstream of Dartmouth, the Greenway Ferry carries pedestrians across the river from the village of Dittisham to Greenway Quay A further 5 miles (8.0 km) upstream is Totnes, where the river is spanned by two road bridges, a railway bridge and a footbridge over. Totnes Bridge is the nearest bridge to the sea and is a road bridge built in 1826-28 by Charles Fowler. Some 1,000 feet (300 m) upstream is Brutus Bridge, constructed in 1982 as part of a road traffic-relief scheme. A further 0.5 miles (0.80 km) upstream, the railway bridge carries the National Rail Exeter to Plymouth line over the river. Immediately upstream of the railway bridge is a footbridge, built in 1993 to provide access to the Totnes (Littlehempston) terminus of the South Devon Railway.

SUMO JAPANSE SUMO WRESTLERS VERY FUNNY 相撲,

Sumo is a competitive full-contact sport where a wrestler (rikishi) attempts to force another wrestler out of a circular ring (dohyō) or to touch the ground with anything other than the soles of the feet. The sport originated in Japan, the only country where it is practiced professionally. It is generally considered to be a gendai budō (a modern Japanese martial art), though this definition is incorrect as the sport has a history spanning many centuries. Many ancient traditions have been preserved in sumo, and even today the sport includes many ritual elements, such as the use of salt purification, from the days when sumo was used in the Shinto religion. Life as a rikishi is highly regimented, with rules laid down by the Sumo Association. Most sumo wrestlers are required to live in communal "sumo training stables" known in Japanese as heya where all aspects of their daily lives—from meals to their manner of dress—are dictated by strict tradition

BEES MOVING A SWARM THAT WENT WRONG, FANTASTIC VIDEO CLIP.

Swarming is the natural means of reproduction of honey bee colonies. A new honey bee colony is formed when the queen bee leaves the colony with a large group of worker bees, a process called swarming. In the prime swarm, about 60% of the worker bees leave the original hive location with the old queen. This swarm can contain thousands to tens of thousands of bees. Swarming is mainly a spring phenomenon, usually within a two- or three-week period depending on the locale, but occasional swarms can happen throughout the producing season. Secondary afterswarms may happen but are rare. Afterswarms are usually smaller and are accompanied by one or more virgin queens. Sometimes a beehive will swarm in succession until it is almost totally depleted of workers. Entomologists consider the colony as a superorganism. An individual bee without a colony cannot survive for long. The colony also needs a certain colony size to reproduce. In the process of swarming the original single colony reproduces to two and sometimes more colonies A beekeeper collecting a bee swarm.A swarm of bees sometimes frightens people, though the bees are usually not aggressive at this stage of their life cycle. This is principally due to the swarming bees' lack of brood (developing bees) to defend and their interest in finding a new nesting location for their queen. This does not mean that bees from a swarm will not attack if they perceive a threat; however, most bees only attack in response to intrusions against their hive. Swarm clusters, hanging off of a tree branch, will move on and find a suitable nesting location in a day or two. Beekeepers are sometimes called to capture swarms that are cast by feral honey bees or from the hives of inattentive beekeepers.

FISHING STARS DARTMOUTH UK, NETTING OFF DARTMOUTH WITH CARL AND CHRIS

Fishing for salmon with a hand net on the Fraser River, CanadaA fishing net or fishnet is a net that is used for fishing. Fishing nets are meshes usually formed by knotting a relatively thin thread. Modern nets are usually made of artificial polyamides like nylon, although nets of organic polyamides such as wool or silk thread were common until recently and are still used. A seine is a large fishing net that may be arranged in a number of different ways. In purse seine fishing the net hangs vertically in the water by attaching weights along the bottom edge and floats along the top. A simple and commonly used fishing technique is beach seining, where the seine net is operated from the shore. Danish seine is a method which has some similarities with trawling. In the UK seine netting for Salmon and Sea-trout in coastal waters is only permitted in a very few locations and where it is permitted one end of the seine must remain fixed and the other end is then waded out and returns to the fixed point. This variant is called Wade netting and is strictly controlled by law.

FISHING STARS PIKE FISHING AT BEESANDS NR DARTMOUTH UK. OCTOBER 25th 1993.

Fishing for pike does require some specialised tackle. However, while there are a few fundamentals that are essential you might already have some of the equipment you will need. Wire traces are absolutely essential for pike fishing or there is every chance that a pike will bite through your line! Line and trace strength needs careful consideration and it is better to opt stronger rather than lighter. A main line of at least 15lb is a good idea and trace wire of 30lb or more. Hooks can be treble or double and crushing the barbs will facilitate their speedy removal when you do land a pike. Pike rods usually have a test curve of 2.5lb or more for bait fishing, and for lure fishing choose one designed to cast 56g (2oz) or so. Floats and/or bite indicators will also be needed. Other than a reliable reel you will also require a large landing net with at least 36 inch arms if triangular in shape, or with a diameter of 30 inches if round framed. For unhooking pike you will need one pair (better still two pairs) of strong, long-handled forceps. A sufficiently large weigh sling (see photo) and unhooking mat, or a sling/mat combo, completes the basics.

ROYAL YAGHT BRITANNIA VISITING DARTMOUTH DURING 1970

Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia is the former Royal Yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. She was the 83rd such vessel since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. She is the second Royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the famous racing cutter built for The Prince of Wales in 1893. She is now permanently moored as an exhibition ship at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland.HMY Britannia was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co. Ltd in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, UK, being launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953 and commissioned on 11 January 1954. The ship was designed with three masts, a 133-foot (41 m) foremast, a 139-foot (42 m) mainmast, and a 118-foot (36 m) mizzenmast. The top 20 feet (6.1 m) of the foremast and mainmast were hinged, to allow the ship to pass under bridges. Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war, although this never happened During her career as Royal Yacht she conveyed the Queen, other members of the Royal Family, and various dignitaries on 696 foreign visits and 272 visits in British waters. In this time Britannia steamed 1,087,623 nautical miles (2,014,278 km). On 20 July 1959, Britannia sailed the newly-opened Saint Lawrence Seaway en route to Chicago where she docked, making the Queen the first Canadian monarch to visit the city. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower was aboard Britannia for part of this cruise; Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan also were later welcomed aboard the Yacht. Charles and Diana, the Prince and Princess of Wales, took their honeymoon cruise aboard Britannia in 1981. The ship also evacuated over 1,000 refugees from the civil war in Aden in 1986.

DARTMOUTH UK PAY AND DISPLAY MEETING. (PART 2)

Dartmouth is still reeling from the aftermath of the Fairfax Place fire which has forced the closure of three town centre roads and the loss of vital car parking spaces, revealed county councillor Jonathon Hawkins. Many of the town's businesses have been clobbered with huge increases in business rate while the town struggles in a world recession. Bringing in parking meters and forcing drivers to pay to park on the town centre streets will make matters worse, Mr Hawkins warned. "The economy of Dartmouth will be under serious threat," he said. Many of the objectors walked out of the meeting in disgust when it was revealed that in spite of County Council extending the public consultation period until Christmas Eve, the pay and display meters had already been ordered! The Town Mayor, Richard Rendle, finished the meeting with the shock announcement that he had just been informed that the Dartmouth Police Station would be closing down shortly due to further cutbacks.

DARTMOUTH UK PAY AND DISPLAY MEETING (PART 1)

THE DARTMOUTH UK PAY AND DISPLAY CAR PARKING MEETING DARTMOUTH has put up a wall of opposition to parking meter plans it is claimed will eat up every available parking space in the town centre and kill off what is already a desperately struggling town economy. But even as the town declared a resounding 'no' to the parking meters there were still fears that the county council plans to impose the new parking fees on Dartmouth whether it likes it or not. In spite of extending the consultation period until the 24th December 2010, Lester Wilmington from Devon County Council admitted, in the public meeting, that in spite of this the pay and display meters had already been ordered! Devon County Council highways management boss Lester Wilmington made it clear that one driving force behind the parking meter plans was the desire to save the county up to £100,000 a year it currently shells out on traffic warden bills — now known as civil enforcement officers. This in spite of estimates that revenue from the Dartmouth pay and display meters would be as much as £400,000 per annum!
